Perhaps one of Tampa’s most historic landmarks, the Tampa Theatre is home to almost a century of history. The mission of the Theatre is to protect the historic landmark as “one of America’s best-preserved examples of grand movie palace architecture” (tampatheatre.org). In fact, the mission was so successful that the theatre was named a Tampa City Landmark in 1978 by the National Register of Historic Places. It also serves as a proud member of the League of Historic American Theaters and Art House Convergence! The best part about the theatre is it’s still fully operational and is a great spot for a movie, show, and more! Every single month, there’s something going on and is a great spot for your next date night!

History of the Theatre

Since its opening in 1926, the Tampa Theatre has entranced locals and visitors for almost one hundred years. The theatre features a gorgeous, replica of the night sky with twinkling stars and a Mediterranean courtyard. Enjoy an adornment of old statues, flowers, and gargoyles too! Believe it or not, the Tampa Theatre only charged 25 cents for admission back in its heyday as movie-going and opulence were on-trend across the country.

However, the theatre took a hit by the ’60s when television topped the popularity scale. Therefore, as tickets, audiences, and films began to dwindle, so too did the future of the Theatre. Luckily, thanks to the heart of the local Tampa citizens, the city was able to spare the Theatre and re-vamp the entire thing. Now, in 2019, the Theatre is operated by the non-profit Tampa Theatre Foundation and is “one of the most heavily utilized venues of its kind in the United States” (tampatheatre.org) and hosts over 600 events every single year!
