Yvette Mayorga’s “Magic Grasshopper” has hopped to St. Petersburg for a must-see, vibrant, public art installation in front of the Museum of Fine Arts through the month of July!
This 30-foot-long sculpture stands proudly at the museum's main entrance, marking the first project in the museum's new public art series that is designed to extend the programming beyond the galleries.

Mayorga is a first-generation Mexican-American Latinx artist whose family emigrated from Mexico. Her style frequently draws on personal and cultural histories, with her recurring technique—piping acrylic paint through pastry bags to create ornate, frosting-like surfaces. This was inspired by her mother’s work as a baker after immigrating to the United States.
Through this style that Mayorga calls “Latinxoco,” she brings together Latinx and Rococo aesthetics, addressing the invisible labor of immigrant and working-class communities, with stories of migration, feminized labor, and belonging.
What is “Magic Grasshopper”?
Originally commissioned by Times Square Arts and presented in New York in 2025, Magic Grasshopper is a large-scale sculpture that resembles a surreal carriage pulled by carousel-style horses. It was previously on view in Times Square in New York, and now it's on view in our great sunshine state!
This sculpture features Mayorga’s signature candy-pink palette, embellished with her distinctive “faux-frosting” piping technique. The sculpture “Magic Grasshopper” combines elements of childhood nostalgia with layered narratives of migration, labor, and colonial history.
The MFA St. Petersburg says the art is “a powerful tribute to the American Dream, weaving together 90s nostalgia, lowrider culture, and critical narratives of migration and labor.”
