The Tampa Theatre Presents Groundhop Day: A Virtual BeerFest August 8, 2020

Searching for a new quarantine style date idea? Look no further than the 9th Annual Tampa Theatre BeerFest to be held virtually on August 8, 2020 at 6:00 p.m. Keeping in tradition by having a theme, this year’s theme is Groundhop Day, honoring the classic film Groundhog Day.

Due to the current climate in our state, the theatre decided that if you can’t come in person, they’re going to bring the experience to you. This year, sample local brews at home with the theatre’s special tasting boxes available for pickup.

Each tasting box includes:

  • 12 bottles and cans from local breweries including Hidden Springs Ale Works, 7venth Sun Brewery, Coppertail Brewing, Cigar City Brewing, and Motorworks Brewing
  • Tampa Theatre popcorn
  • Two tasting glasses

The cost is $55 for the grand sampling box and $75 for the premium box (hint: this one features higher-end brews).

Before you pick up your boxes, the Tampa Theatre team is also designing a scavenger hunt across downtown Tampa in order to work up a thirst as you look for clues and experience sights on foot before returning back to the theatre itself. Box pickup will take place from 4:00-7:00 p.m. on Friday, August 7 and 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 8.

The night of the event, hop onto Facebook at 6:00 p.m. to watch a welcome video from Tampa Theatre president and CEO John Bell following by live music from Ronnie Dee & the Superstars. At 7:00 p.m., tune into the panel of local brewmasters who will discuss the brewing process while also answering questions on the stream. Lastly, at 7:45 p.m. settle in for a Netflix watch party featuring Groundhog Day.

While the event itself maintains a light and fun atmosphere the purpose is still serious. This annual event benefits Tampa Theatre’s artistic, educational, and community programs while also helping with its preservation. As a result of COVID-19, the unstable financial situation has put a strain on non-profit organizations around the area so this event is more important than ever.
