The weekends are always packed full of fun activities in Tampa Bay, and this weekend is no exception! If you love the downtown Tampa area, you’ll love what’s going on soon. This Saturday and Sunday is the grand opening of the new Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park! The grand opening will be during the Riverfront Rock celebration consisting of a variety of opportunities for a good time with your significant other. Here’s everything you need to know about Riverfront Rock, the park, and one of the event highlights, the Mayor’s Mac and Cheese Throwdown.
Julian B. Lane Riverfront Park
This new Riverfront park is 25 acres large and is located in the heart of Tampa across the river from the Tampa Riverwalk and the Straz Center. There will be multiple lawns and pavilions for events, a play cove and splash pad, sports courts, picnic shelters and more. Also, you’ll be able to enjoy a view of downtown Tampa and the waterfront while at the park. There’s also boat docks for those arriving on the water and a boathouse for kayak and paddle board rentals.
Riverfront Rock
For a park this awesome, the grand opening has to be just as good. Riverfront Rock, held on Saturday, May 12th and Sunday May 13th, will take place at the newly opened park. This event will be free! There will also be live entertainment and lots of food and drinks for you and your loved one to enjoy. Some of the activities you’l be able to take advantage of are the morning fitness classes, a basketball tournament, tennis lessons, and more. Live entertainment will consist of several bands playing throughout the day, with Third Eye Blind headlining at 8pm. And of course, all the outdoor facilities, including sports courts, will be available for use during the grand opening. Then, at 9:30pm there will also be a fireworks show!

Mayor’s Mac and Cheese Throwdown
Last year’s event, as always, was a huge success. This year, the Mayor’s Mac and Cheese Throwdown is likely to be just as amazing as years past, especially with a lovely view of downtown Tampa. There will be over 15 different restaurants participating in the event, each with their own version of the signature dish. This event will be held from 4pm to 8pm on Saturday, May 12th and is also free to the public, with sampling tickets sold on site!
