We all know it; traveling around the world is an expensive dream most of us want to fulfill. There is no need to be discouraged by this! While you save for the best trip of your life, here are some amazing international movies you can watch for a perfect movie night. Grab some popcorn, drinks, and learn more about the culture of some of the countries you might be visiting on your trip.

Palmeras en la nieve (Palm Trees in The Snow)

This Spanish movie proves that love can be found in the most adverse conditions and that time and distance mean nothing when people are in love. Based in Equatorial Guinea during the time it was a Spanish Colony, Kilian, the son of a Spaniard who works at the cocoa colony, falls in love with Bisila, a native woman who works at the colony as a nurse. The movie moves back and forth between the present and the past, as Clarence, Kilian’s niece, tries to understand more about her father’s past. Filled with love as well as pain, Palmeras en la Nive will leave you with revolutionary feelings and lots of tears, but is totally worth the watch! *can be found on Netflix

Les Émotifs Anonymes (Romantics Anonymous)

Tired of watching stereotypical, predictable romantic movies? Then Romantics Anonymous is for you! This is the story of how two middle-aged, socially anxious chocolate lovers put aside their fears and open up to the idea of love. However, there are many bumps in their story, as their anxiety prevents them from showing their feelings. Follow Angelique’s and Jean-René´s love story and learn more French (the language of love!). *can be found on Amazon Prime.

Como Agua Para Chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate)

Another forbidden love, Like Water for Chocolate is based on a book written by famous Mexican author Laura Esquivel. According to tradition, Tita must take care of her mother instead of marrying any man. Because of this, her family forbids her from being with Pedro, the love of her life. Pedro decides to marry Tita’s sister so that he can still be close to Tita. Throughout the years, their love never disappears, but there are constant drama and family problems between them. Watching Like Water For Chocolate is perfect for romantic, cozy nights, and you can even go as far as reading its book! *can be found on Netflix or Amazon Prime

Contratiempo (The Invisible Guest)

Not really looking for a love movie? The Invisible Guest has so much suspense and mystery that it will keep you on the edge of your seat. One murder, tons of lies, and multiple plots make this story impossible to predict. Follow the story of a young Spanish millionaire who was found next to the body of his lover, but swears he did not do it. Pay close attention and perhaps you’ll be able to decipher the plot before the movie ends! *can be found on Netflix

A Pesar de Todo (Despite Everything)

Love comes in different forms and sisterly love is one of the most powerful feelings a human can feel. A Pesar de Todo tells the story of four sisters who learn her mother’s death that their father is not their biological father. Even more shocking, her mother wasn’t even sure if they shared the same biological father. Because of this, they start an adventurous quest to find their real fathers. A Pesar de Todo will for sure make you laugh, but it will also remind you that no matter the differences, family is always family. *can be found on Netflix
