5 Great Spots to Go Kayaking


Summer is beginning to wind down with school starting soon and the dawn of fall decorations at every home décor store. However, one of the great things about living in the sunshine state is beautiful weather year-round! Summer doesn’t have to end once the kiddos go back to school, there is still plenty of time to get your outdoor-time in and maybe try something new! With so many water access points across the Tampa area, there are also many places to go kayaking! Kayaking is a great way to get outside on the water and spend some quality time with loved ones. You’ll definitely want to set aside time to venture out into the waters at these awesome ‘yakkin’ locations!

Tampa Bay SUP

Locations: Tampa, Clearwater, and Safety Harbor

Tampa Bay SUP is a stand-up paddleboarding company that offers SUP rentals, kayak rentals, and paddleboat rentals. Hop onto a kayak and paddle around Davis Island, Harbor Island, Cypress Point Park, and more. Tampa Bay SUP also offers ECO tours for large groups if a group date is in your future.  Once you rent your kayak, you will also receive a personal flotation device as well as a quick ‘how-to’ if this is your first-time‘ yakkin’. Rates depend on the number of ‘yakkers; for example, a single kayak for one hour is $25, whereas a tandem is only $10 more at $35 an hour. WhatSUP Paddle Sports

Location: Tampa

Similar to Tampa Bay SUP, WhatSUP is another stand-up paddleboarding company located on the Courtney Campbell Causeway past Rocky Point. WhatSUP offers paddleboard rentals, lessons, and tours, kayak rentals, bike rentals, and land paddling! This truly is a one-stop-shop for outdoor rentals of all kinds. Their kayak rentals are quick, easy, and perfect for a last-minute adventure. Their pricing is competitive at $25 an hour for a single and tandem kayaks coming in at $35 an hour. Guests can also rent kayaks for a full day for less than $80.

Sweetwater Kayaks

Location: St. Petersburg

Sweetwater Kayaks is located at Weedon Island Preserve and has been renting out kayaks since 1992. Sweetwater not only rents out kayaks but also offers lessons as well as expeditions. The team at Sweetwater is unmatched with a love and passion for kayaking, plus years and years of experience to help ensure your kayak experience is informational and fun. The rental shop is open every day until 5 p.m., however, the last rental is at 3:30 p.m.—so get there early! Their rates are incredible at only $17 per hour on a single and $25 for a double! They also offer stand up paddleboarding and canoeing! The Sweetwater staff asks that you bring drinking water, quick-dry clothing, cell phones, water shoes, shades, sunscreen, and a completed rentals form! They ask that you don’t bring any pets or alcohol—have fun!

See Through Adventures

Location: St. Petersburg

See Through Adventures is a glass-bottom kayak experience where guests can view manatees, dolphins, rays, and more giving guests a closer look inside marine wildlife. So that you have the best experience, See Through Adventures practices ‘passive observation’ so that guests can see manatees 99% of the time as well as dolphins almost as often. In fact, See Through Adventures is so confident in their practices that if you don’t see a manatee, they will give you 50% off of your next tour. Keep in mind that reservations must be made 24 hours in advance. Pricing differs per tour, with a half-hour tour at $59 per person and a one hour tour at $89 per person. Their last rental is at 4 p.m.

Urban Kai

Locations: Tampa and St. Petersburg

Urban Kai is Florida’s premier SUP shop offering stand up paddleboarding, kayaking, and starboard starship rentals. What makes Urban Kai unique is they offer rentals at their Tampa/St. Pete locations as well as the option to bring equipment to a designated location for you for a delivery fee! Guests can rent single kayaks ($25 for 1hr), double kayaks ($35 for 1 hr), and single fishing kayaks ($45 for 2 hours).
